James H. Monteath papers, 1850-1917, bulk, 1905-1917.

James H. Monteath was a newspaperman in Butte, Blackfeet Indian agent, mining investor in Tonopah, Nevada, Glacier National Park concessionaire, and major in Grigsby's Rough Riders during the Spanish American War. Papers consist of correspondence and financial records (1905-1913) concerning his Nevada mining investments; correspondence and financial records (1913-1914) concerning his Glacier National Park concessions; minutes (1911) of the East Comstock Mining Company; and a diary (1850) kept by his father James Monteath. The collection consists primarily of incoming correspondence (1905-1913) from Malcolm L. MacDonald and others concerning investments in Tonopah, Nevada, mining properties. In addition there is a file of general correspondence (1912-1913) for the Yerington Mountain Copper Company; minutes (1911) for the East Comstock Mining Company; plus correspondence and financial records (1913-1914) for the Glacier Park Trading Company and the Tom Dawson Transportation Company. There are certificates for Monteath's appointment as a major in Grigsby's Rough Riders and as Blackfeet Indian Agent. There is also a diary (1850-1852) of James H. Monteath's father James Monteath, describing his trip by sailing ship from Scotland to New York, in 1850 and two sight seeing trips (1851 and 1852) by boat through upstate New York, and the Great Lakes. James H. Monteath was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1853, the son of James Monteath and his wife Isabella McIntyre. The father was a native of Scotland, who arrived in New York City in 1850. James H. Monteath left New York about 1880 and traveled by steamboat up the Missouri River to Fort Benton, and then by stagecoach to Deer Lodge. He stayed there briefly, and then moved to Butte. He worked as bookkeeper for the Intermountain Publishing Company, from 1885 until 18--. ...
